Dean Wampler brings Fast Data with Scala to GOTO Chicago in May 2016

What is GOTO Chicago?

GOTO Chicago is an enterprise software development conference designed for team leads, architects, and project management and is organized by developers, for developers. The result is a high quality conference experience where a tremendous amount of attention and investment has gone into having the best content on the most important topics presented by the leaders in our community, staged in an intimate environment needed to support as much learning and networking as possible.

We’re proud to have Lightbend's own Dean Wampler giving a session at GOTO Chicago entitled “Scala: The Unpredicted Lingua Franca for Data Science”. Dean is the Big Data Architect at Lightbend and specializes in the application of Functional Programming principles to Big Data applications, using Hadoop and alternative technologies.

Scala as the lingua franca of Data Science

In his talk, Dean shows how today’s Data Scientists are part of an heterogeneous team that has to face many problems and work towards a global solution together. This includes a new responsibility to be productive and agile in order to have their work integrated into the platform, which is a primary reason  technologies like Apache Spark are so important nowadays and are gaining traction from different communities.

And even though some binding are available to legacy languages there, all the creativity in new ways to analyse the data has to be done in Scala. The second part of this talk will introduce and summarize all the new methodologies and scientific advances in machine learning done Scala as the main language, rather than others. He'll demonstrates the right tooling for Data Scientists which is enabling interactivity, live reactivity, charting capabilities and robustness in Scala, using technologies like Spark Notebook and Docker.
